Q & A with John Schweri
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I represented a client in a complex juvenile custody case that spanned several years and won custody at trial for my client paternal grandmother.
How did you build a successful practice?
By being honest with clients, the Court, witnesses, other attorneys and working hard and diligently, and keeping promises to clients to fight hard for them, taking care of my clients inquiries by promptly returning calls, texts, emails, and writing letters to keep them informed about the status of their case and options going forward, doing the right thing for my client even when it involves a lot more work, doing the thorough detail oriented work on every case to understand all the facts and law involved, and investigate all avenues to reach the best resolution for my client. I treat every case like I’m the one on trial.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Honesty, work ethic, morals, experience, the ability to communicate, understanding of the law and local legal community. Ability to take a case to trial and win.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
80%, the other 20% is hard work, experience and diligence, and ability as a trial attorney.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
My understanding of similar cases, ability to help in the matter, local insight, connections I’ve made and experience I’ve gained in handling more than 3000 cases.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
General overview of the case, parties involved to check conflicts, and estimate time frame and desired outcome of the case.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I cover 12 counties which is more than most, and have a Master's in Business Administration and a background of more than 18 years in Tax Law, Audit Defense, and Consulting businesses including working at a local CPA firm and more than 14 years in owning, buying, selling, and renting multi-family real Estate in Nashville TN and surrounding areas.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Helping people through difficult times, or helping them build or plan their businesses and estates.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Spending time with friends and family, playing drums and guitar with my bands and attending concerts, traveling and road trips, cooking and bartending, playing and watching sports, cards and board games, hiking and working out, attending live theatre and participating in community theatre, spontaneous road trips, planning conferences and festivals, playing video games and going to fun parks and watching the sunset staying up all night and going to bed after sunrise.
Are you involved in your community?
I volunteer in our Juvenile Court to help support the youth facing criminal charges and trying to get their lives on track so they have somebody to believe in them, I play drums in an annual concert called Muletown Revue where we raise money for children in the Court system (CASA) Court Appointed Special Advocates, and our local hospital, I do a lot of pro bono work for community members who do not have the resources to hire an attorney and performed more than 100 hours a year of free service to the community every year I’ve been in practice. I believe all people deserve justice regardless of their ability to pay for it and try to donate as much free time as I can to help others especially disadvantaged parties. I am a lover of people and causes and Love a good challenge.
I run an event center where we do concerts and fundraisers for non-profits, children, schools, and the environment, we have Saturday farmers markets for local farmers & merchants, do conferences for Midwife continuous education & training, do summer camps for inter-city kids from Nashville to visit the country, community dinners, Sunday brunch, weddings, festivals, conferences, live theatre, birthday celebrations, family reunions, and concerts.
